Mike and Cheryl here. We have a 44 foot Class A RV. Here is my review of Rafter J Bar Ranch Campground. Getting to the campground was easy, but I would not recommend taking the road past Mt Rushmore. Too curvy but doable. The road in the campground is gravel and in good condition. The trees are all well trimmed. The campground office was open and everyone was friendly. Small camp store available. There is a large parking area near the office. There are no seasonal campers. The campground is large, so the map is needed. The road signage to our site was good. Sites have fire pits. Our site was a back in site with a gravel drive and gravel patio area, with a picnic table. The site had a nice view of the campground and beyond. Our site was level. The site was dry. Site was full hookup. Did not see the bath house but they have one. There was a small laundry. The swimming pool and hot tub was closed for all of September. They have no rec room. No workout fitness room. The grounds look very nice and well kept. No cable tv. No over air antenna. Wifi poor. Verizon cell service OK. So here is the bad: They close the pool and hot tub in September, but they charge the same campsite fee. I would come back. We liked site #246, but 128, 149, 170, 231, 232 and 222 are nice also. Fantastic resort! Spacious, clean, immaculately kept, great views and friendly staff. We drove past many other campgrounds and resorts while in the area and I believe Rafter J Bar was the best option we could have selected. We enjoyed their all you can eat pancake breakfast twice during our stay, and got to know the staff managing the breakfast during that time - NICE people. Exceptional resort and we would definitely stay again!

Excellent campsite. Large grassy space between each site. Many open grass areas for kids and/or dogs. Pool and playground. Friendly staff and clean laundry and shower facilities. Close to Hill City, Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer national forest. Stayed 5 nights and would definitely stay again. Expensive but worth the $85 a night.

We stayed September 9-14, 2021. We had a great campsite(#261) with a view of the mountains and plenty of room. Great walking areas for the dogs.(no dog park). Within walking distance of the Mickelson Trail( for walking or biking). Easy access to Mount Rushmore, Custer State Park and Hill City. It was very clean and well maintained. Internet was weak, but we were told that in advance. Really enjoyed our stay here!!

Stayed 3 nights in late August 2020. Perfect location for touring the Black Hills, Crazy Horse, Mount Rushmore and Custer State Park. Many things to see and do in this area. Campground had a nice store/office (closed at 7). Bathhouse and laundry facilities were very nice and clean. We stayed in main camp area, site 10, back amongst the pines. Site was gravel and not level, we had to squeeze through the pine trees to back into site. A bit of road noise, but love this campground. Gorgeous, well maintained - I wish we had more time to spend just relaxing and enjoying.

This place was much more than we ever expected. Located just minutes from downtown Hill City and about 15 minutes to Mt Rushmore. Campground is very spaced out with different camping areas. We were in site 270 in Line Camp area. Very large site with fire pit and views of the hills. Lots of space to take walks with the dog. Clean and quiet park with very friendly staff. It was a little pricy but for the area and time of year we thought it was fair. Would definitely recommend and will stay again next time in Black Hills.

We have been on the road for almost 2 weeks now and this resort is by far the best we've stayed at so far (we only stayed 2 nights at Base Camp). The resort is spacious, the space between sites is twice as much as other campgrounds. Large camp table and chairs and fire ring, sand volleyball court and basketball hoop. The showers/bathrooms were very roomy and clean, the water pressure and temperature was terrific. There is a laundry with 6 washers ($3) and 4 dryers ($0.25 per 7 minutes) with 2 tables and a laundry trolley. No change machine so remember to get your quarters before the office closes at 7pm. There is a well stocked camp store with the essentials and gifts etc. The wifi is awful. Only available at the office and the phone reception was bad too (one bar). A great base to see Custer State Park, Crazy Horse & Mt Rushmore. A bit of road noise if you're really listening for it but we really felt like we were in the middle of nowhere. Beautiful. Would definitely recommend this RV resort.

Stayed here for 5 days. VERY nice park and a GREAT location. We will be back! PROS: - GREAT central location in the Black Hills (7 minutes to Hill City - Good food and shopping, 8 minutes to Mt. Rushmore KOA at Palmer Gulch Resort - Horseback riding + very nice camp store, 16 minutes to Mt. Rushmore, and 20 minutes to Key Stone - Lot's to do there.) - BEAUTIFUL SETTING - FAR superior to KOA and other local camps. - S P A C I O U S sites!!! - Nice privacy. Many sites shaded by tall pines. Again, FAR superior to KOA and other local camps. - Well maintained grounds and facilities. - Friendly staff. - VERY nice pool, patio and playground. The kids in our group loved the pool and playground. - Quiet and peaceful. You can really relax here. - Well stocked camp store. - Easy check-in. CONS - Hard to note any cons for this place, but feel I need to do so to provide a balanced perspective: - Gravel roads throughout. I realize this is common for most camps, but I have never been fan of dust and dirty rigs. - Individual site numbers/signs are VERY small and difficult to see/read from the camp road. (NOTE - I have 20/20 vision) - NO ONLINE RESERVATION OPTIONS. Must make reservations by phone. Would be nice to make reservations from their website and to see individual site availability. Would also be nice to see a 1-3 picture of each site. Would also nice to see 1-3 pictures of each site on their website. Or take 360 pics and add them to Google Maps.

I have never had more fun and loved a campground more. Absolutely everything is perfect. Maintained perfectly, clean. Pool and hot tub are perfect. Price is higher than other parks but you get tons of extras. Location to all the area attractions is amazing. No doubt I will be back.

We arrived here on May 20 for a 2 night stay just in time to watch it snow for 2 days. The campground was beautiful when we arrived, the office staff friendly and helpful. It literally snowed the entire time we were there and was wet and over a foot deep. A large chunk of wet snow fell from a pine tree and dead centered the roof vent, shattering it. The staff at the office contacted a mobile RV repairman they knew who called me and gave me the name of an RV dealer in Rapid City that could repair it. The staff plowed snow on the asphalt road and ran a skid loader around the gravel roads so we could see where to drive to get out. We didn’t get to see any of the sights in the area due to the weather, but plan on a redo to the area and will stay at Rafter J again.
