Yup it's free. We drove pass the GC into the back section. Site was on the river, not to bad as for level. This park is very basic Camping. There is water available to fill your rig. Roads are dirt so if it has or going to rain watch out. Camp site are far apart. Free fire wood is at some sites we had lots of wood. Table and fire pit is at each site. To bad other city's don't do this. El Reno Ok on I 40 has a city park that is nice. We will be back here.

We were looking for a place to stop where we could get caught up on email, news, etc. after 2 hectic weeks in Teton/Yellowstone. We're self contained and don't use the facilities. We stayed on week days in mid-July in our 25 foot MH.
This is a free CG run by the town (by volunteers) and we enjoyed our stay. The volunteers stopped by and were friendly. There are 2 sections to the CG. Enter via the upper CG to find sites arrayed in a large treed field. Follow a dirt road at the far end, past the golf course, and find the lower CG with sites arrayed mostly in the trees along the Yellowstone River. We stayed in the upper CG. The sites were mostly level with picnic tables, fire rings and firewood may be available for free. The sites were a mix of sun and shade. Many were quite large with some privacy. There's no wifi. There was reliable Verizon and ATT coverage that slowed temporarily in the early evening. There is a boat launch in the lower CG so there was a bit of car traffic in the early evening which stopped by 9pm and was not a problem. Trains did go through the town at night and did not keep us awake. The CG could use a little TLC, yet, it was a nice free place to stay.
We walked into town for groceries and visited the Museum of the Beartooths which was quite fun. Columbus is also en route to the Beartooth Scenic Byway (SR 212) which is a gorgeous drive.

Make sure to leave a donation! This is a free camp area, but I would (as would other boondockers) love to see more cities offer places like this--so be sure to support it. This is actually more like two campgrounds the first one that you drive into is open and has less tree cover, but if you keep driving (past the golf course) there is a second camping area. This side has more sites with tree shade. Many of the sites are RIGHT on the river. It is beautiful! There are several water spigots to hook up to with pull though drives for filling up. Most sites are pull through but a few are back-in only. PET FRIENDLY, yay! Public rest rooms, even FREE firewood during certain times of the year (I think it is actually provided every day but when the park is full, the wood goes fast). Large enough pull through for large rigs. Picnic tables at nearly every site. It may look like just a wooded area with some gravel roads but the town has invested a lot into the area. Again, please encourage more parks like this with your donation, even better, after you leave your donation head into town and fill up on groceries, fuel, etc.

This is a lovely option, and please leave a donation to the city, which looks like it could really use some funds. A free place to stay, nice sites, flush toilets, water spigots, dry camping. Police cruised thru a couple times which is very nice. We walked about 1/2 mile into town and bought groceries for dinner. We called ahead and the 2 spots in Billings both wanted over $70 a night, so this is a great option if you don't want to pay just to stay somewhere for the night on your RoadTrip.

August 2014: Beautiful campground with mature trees right beside the Yellowstone River. Boondocking sites with fire rings/grates and picnic tables. Police patrol the park frequently so very safe. There's a boat launch and seems to be a popular place to start or end a river rafting trip.10 day maximum stay. No charge to stay here but donations requested. Lovely place to relax for a few days and maybe do some fishing.

Basic but beautiful. Nestled in the trees right in the river. Campground has fire rings and tables but they're dirty so bring a cloth. Bathrooms are basic but ok. Just really peaceful and beautiful. Rocky and uneven spaces but you could get a small MH here. We stayed in a 5th wheel.
