Mather Campground South Rim - Grand Canyon National Park

This campground is a long walk to the rim. For some people it might be best to drive closer and then walk. Showers are $2.50 in quarters and all the way down near the check in area. Laundry is there too. Unfortunately there is no RV parking so you have to figure out how to get all your stuff down there if you do not have a car. Bike trails are somewhat confusing, especially in the area near the train station. The dump was very busy and has no rinse water. Of course water in precious in the park but having yucky dump gear is no fun either.

This is the best place to camp if you really want to experience the Grand Canyon. Stayed at sites 206, 210 and 258. 210 and 258 best for solar. We have a Thor Vegas class A approximately 26.5芒鈧劉 (29芒鈧劉 with rear slide deployed). Towing a Jeep Cherokee. No problems with fitting on these sites. Restrooms not bad for a basic campsite. The only complaint would be that it appears that a number of selfish campers made reservations and didn芒鈧劉t show up leaving about 25% of the sites vacant. Commented to the rangers and they said it happens a lot but people have already paid so they wash their hands of the situation and keep turning people away. Doesn芒鈧劉t seem fair.

We booked well in advance and had a great time. We stayed in Mather as we prefer the more secluded campsites over trailer village. We use solar to recharge our battery. The campground has a bike and walking trail in the back that you can take to Mather Point and the visitors center. BEWARE the dump station is a health disaster. There is one dump port, no rinse or black tank spray water hook ups. So, many people consequently run the hose and hook up to the drinking water, which is 10芒鈧劉 from the dump 冒鸥鈥櫬┟芭嘎ぢ⒚芭嘎ぢ芭嘎ぢ. That is a serious cross connection. I can芒鈧劉t believe they have it set up like this. We dumped, didn芒鈧劉t spray out the black tank and filled with water in the campground at one of the freeze proof hydrants.

Regarding the showers/laundry at Mathers Campground, CLOSED. In addition to the sign at the entrance, just spoke with a facilities manager at this location who said these facilities will probably open towards the end of the month.

Spent 3 nights tent camping here in April. Loved hearing the wind thru the pines in the nicely spaced sites. Bathrooms were convenient and very clean with flush toilets. They have pull thru sites for small RVs if you芒鈧劉re ok without electric. I drove thru the trailer village and Mather campground is much prettier/ natural setting. Will definitely be back.

Oct 2019: We chose not to camp here, but did use the RV Dump station. Being well inside the National Park, it can芒鈧劉t be reached without going through one of the park entrance stations and paying the park entry fee. The dump station is just outside of the campground. There are two curving paved pull-through lanes, but there is only one waste inlet. It is in a concrete island between the two lanes, and is set below surrounding pavement level in a concrete apron. There is a rinse water standpipe with an on-off valve and an attached hose at the waste inlet. There is a potable freshwater standpipe about 15 feet away from the waste inlet, also between the two lanes. It has a hose with a spring-loaded on-off valve and nozzle at the outlet end (so no way to attach your own hose). There is also a potable freshwater faucet off to the side of the 芒鈧搊utside芒鈧 curved lane, that does have hose threads. If you plan to get freshwater at this dump station, look at the location and style of the two different freshwater sources before you drive in, then enter the correct lane in the correct direction to meet your needs. This site was clean and appeared well maintained. Be aware that this is a very busy park, and that many of the dump site users are driving rental RVs. They aren芒鈧劉t all familiar with the details of proper waste dumping, and are not always calm and collected about their entire dump site experience.

Great place to stay, restrooms near by, shower/laundry facility was a ways away and busy. But the staff were helpful and courteous when I had to have my truck towed away. They even tried jumping it for me to no avail.

Mather Campground - Oak Loop in a pull-through, space 205 - September 2017. Easy access (although we turned around and pulled through backwards so our door/awning faced the right way) with plenty of privacy, etc. For a National Park campground, it was spacious, quiet and easy to get in and out of! Our toad fit right along with our 27' motorhome. Elk wandering through morning and evening, easy access to the shuttles and bike paths - this site was perfect for our 2 night stay at the south rim!

Great if you can get in but if you can't you can do "Dispersed Camping" off Forest Service road 328 right outside the South Gate and across from a Ranger Station. (West side of main road) go about a 1/4 mile down this gravel road and you start seeing fire rings.
